A Sister’s Love

Songs Inspired by her Brother Help Raise Awareness of LGS

On November 1, local artists and LGS community members joined the LGS Foundation in Santa Monica, California to help raise awareness and funds for Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome.

Meet the Artist: Christina Apostolopulos

Hi, my name is Christina and my younger brother Theo has LGS. I’m currently a musician living in Los Angeles, but I regularly visit my parents and Theo in Santa Barbara (just a couple of hours drive away). Theo is home to me – a respite from busy city life and a constant source of love and comfort.

Theo started having seizures at just a few months old. Early days were tough – I remember my mom, myself, and my younger sister Grace having to administer ACTH shots into Theo’s leg when he was still a baby (I was about 10, Grace 6). Sometimes a medication would work and the seizures would stop for a while, but they always came back. It became very disheartening, and over time it’s been harder to stay hopeful that they will ever stop. The hardest part of all is seeing someone you love be in pain.

I would love, more than anything else in my whole life, for Theo to stop having seizures. It would be amazing to communicate with him someday and really know his thoughts & feelings instead of just guessing. I wish that for everyone in the LGS community.

Advice for new families:

Finding other families who deal with LGS has been a tremendous resource for us. I would also say that it’s important to take care of yourself, otherwise, you’ll have a very hard time caring for your loved one with LGS.
