When Light and Darkness Stood Side by Side

Kairo’s Journey with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome

Kairo’s story began on the day of a total solar eclipse, a moment where light and darkness stood side by side. We didn’t know then how fitting that would be for his life.

His seizures started when he was still a baby, subtle at first but quickly becoming impossible to ignore. As parents, we knew something was wrong, but our concerns were initially dismissed by his first pediatrician, leaving us feeling unheard and questioning our instincts. Despite being told not to worry, we pushed forward, and what followed was a whirlwind of hospital stays, tests, medications, and learning a world we were never prepared for.

He underwent MRIs, genetic testing, and countless evaluations, but no clear reason for what caused his infantile spasms was ever found. Eventually, we were given a diagnosis of Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, and everything changed.

LGS brings constant uncertainty, sleepless nights, and a future that is impossible to predict. The hardest part is not knowing what comes next, but through it all, Kairo continues to show a strength that inspires us every day. He is more than his diagnosis, he is full of personality, resilience, and light. We have learned to celebrate the smallest victories because those moments mean everything.

What has been most challenging is the constant fight, not just against seizures but against systems that make accessing care and essential equipment difficult. Families like ours should not have to fight this hard to keep our children safe.

What has helped us most is finding support through doctors who listen and families who understand. Our hope for Kairo is stability, progress, and a future where his condition does not define his limits. For the LGS community, we hope for more awareness, more research, and better support.

To families just beginning this journey, you are not alone. There will be hard days, but there will also be strength you didn’t know you had. Kairo’s life may be filled with challenges, but he is also our greatest source of light, proving that even in the darkest moments, something powerful and beautiful can still shine through.
