In Loving Memory of Amaree Brown

August 3, 2009 – August 25, 2023

Amaree Brown was never defined by her diagnosis—she defined everyone who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

From the moment she was born, we shared a bond that words could never fully describe. At just two months old, our lives changed forever when a medical emergency led to a diagnosis that would eventually become Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Doctors prepared us for the worst, but Amaree spent the next 14 years proving that statistics could never measure the strength of the human spirit.

She endured hundreds of seizures, countless hospitalizations, surgeries, medications, and unimaginable obstacles, yet she met every challenge with quiet courage, unwavering resilience, and a joy that inspired everyone around her.

Many people saw what Amaree couldn’t do. I saw everything she could.

Others saw a little girl who didn’t walk or talk, but I saw unconditional love, incredible strength, and a resilience far greater than most people will ever experience. She taught me that communication isn’t limited to words, that love isn’t measured by ability, and that every smile, every touch, and every moment together was a gift. While I spent years believing I was her protector, the truth is that she was the one saving me. She transformed my fear into purpose, my heartbreak into compassion, and my life into one dedicated to fighting for children like her.

LGS was always the opponent, but Amaree was the fighter.

I often imagined myself as her referee, helping guide her through each battle while she courageously stepped back into the ring day after day. We never knew what tomorrow would bring, yet she faced every challenge with a strength that humbled me. Although her journey on earth ended at just 14 years old after a seizure in her sleep, LGS did not define her legacy.

Her legacy is one of perseverance, hope, and unconditional love. She showed us that a meaningful life isn’t measured by its length or by milestones, but by the lives it touches.

One of my favorite memories of Amaree is her infectious smile and the way she could light up a room with her joy, even through the hardest days. She brought people together, reminding us to cherish every moment. Her laughter, her spirit, and the love she shared will forever be one of the greatest gifts in my life.

If I had to choose one word to represent Amaree’s life, it would be hope. Not blind optimism, but the choice to keep loving, keep fighting, and keep living fully even when the future was uncertain. Hope carried Amaree through every challenge, and it continues to carry her legacy forward.

Amaree will forever be my hero, my greatest blessing, and the reason I became the person I am today. Her body may be at peace, but her spirit lives on in every act of kindness, every family fighting LGS, and every life she touched. She didn’t lose her battle—she completed her mission.
