Kim is the proud mother of three successful adult children and
grandmother to an active three year old boy. Even though her
youngest son Michael has Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, Kim
considers him just as successful as his older brother and sister.
While many people would define success by professional or
monetary achievements, Kim defines success in terms of
happiness. She feels that Michael, despite his diagnosis, is a very happy young man.
Over the years Kim has become involved with issues related to medical and physical
disabilities. She has been a member of the Special Education PTA and a parent member
on the Committee for Special Education. She also became a literacy volunteer, and was
quite surprised when her first student, who spoke little English, had a child with severe
seizures. (There was little language barrier between these two moms when communicating
about their experiences with epilepsy). In parenting a child with disabilities, Kim has learned
throughout the years that knowledge is power. There are opportunities and services
available for children with special needs, but parents need to educate themselves on where
to turn. Parents unfortunately have to fight for everything. Kim is thankful for the support
of her family and friends.
In the fall of 2007, Kim’s daughter Christina enlisted Kim to help form the LGS Foundation
in an effort to raise awareness and offer support to others living with this diagnosis. Now
that Michael attends a day habilitation program for adults with disabilities, Kim is able to
pursue a curriculum in business and nonprofit management, while focusing her attention on
the LGS Foundation.
